There were five social classes in the Middle Ages, each with its own perks. There was one class that had four sub-classes. The rules of the classes were strict with only a few exceptions. If you were born poor, you stayed poor. Back in the Middle Ages, the only thing that mattered was land. Money had virtually no value to people. Money was only used with tradesmen or when buying food or animals.
Nobles were the ones that owned all of the land, so they had the most power.Vassals were the knights that protected the manor and were highly honored and given land. Clergy were church officials and the group was made up of Bishops, priests, monks, and nuns. Then there were the tradesmen, they were peasants that were slightly higher than serfs. They were higher because they did something other than farm. Serfs were the lowest group, they only came to the manor for protection. The serfs supplies the manor with food.
